Writing Workshops

We know you’re an avid reader, but now we want to help you become an avid writer. Turn the next page and start your story from the very beginning. For the first time ever, BookCon will offer workshops in Fiction, Non-Fiction and Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Join us as we dive into what makes good writing and discover a new spark inside yourself! All Writing Workshops are in conjunction with the MFA Writing department at Sarah Lawrence College.

  • SOLD OUT: Fiction Writing Workshop: Saturday, June 2 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

    Let the prompts guide you! Our own works of fiction are a leap into the unknown and this workshop will combine the art of language with boldness of your imaginative grasp. You will discover more about your own writing and discuss important works by some of the great writers who have come before us. Please bring something to write with. Handouts and additional instructions will be provided. This workshop is designed for ages 17+.

  • Creative Nonfiction Writing Workshop: Sunday, June 3 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

    Is it possible to write freely about other people without exploiting them? Is there a difference between factual and essential truth? How do we find a coherent narrative within the messy realities of life? Here you will engage in spirited and thought-provoking conversations of the aesthetics and ethics of selected nonfiction texts. This workshop is writing intensive—please bring a laptop or notebook. Handouts and additional instructions will be provided. This workshop is designed for ages 17+.

  • SOLD OUT: Fantasy and Sci-Fi Writing Workshop: Saturday, June 2 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

    Fantasy and sci-fi writers like Patrick Rothfuss and George R.R. Martin are producing some of the most compelling fiction of our time. You’ll focus on how to combine mind-bending world-building with a powerful narrative drive. You’ll look closely at the special questions posed by selected speculative fiction texts, a series of guided prompts will be folded into our discussion. Please bring something to write with. Handouts and additional instructions will be provided. This workshop is designed for ages 17+.

  • SOLD OUT: ALL AGES Fantasy and Sci-Fi Writing Workshop: Sunday, June 3 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

    Are you obsessed with the fae in A Court of Thorns and Roses ? Have you thought about what it would be like if life was more like a video game in Ready Player One? In this all ages workshop we will learn how to make the impossible a reality on the page. Look at how magic and technology can change the world around us by looking at some of the authors that made it possible! Please bring something to write with and your imagination. Handouts and additional instructions will be provided. This workshop is designed for writers of all ages.

These workshops will take place at the Javits Center in the River Pavilion.
